MainFirst strengthens its Emerging Markets Corporate Debt team and appoints Andranik Safaryan as new team head

Frankfurt am Main, 11. January 2022 – MainFirst is strengthening its Emerging Markets Debt team with the appointment of Andranik Safaryan, who took up his role as Team Head on 1 January 2022. In addition, a Junior Portfolio Manager will join the team in February 2022. With these two new hires, MainFirst is expanding its capacity and building on its expertise in emerging market corporate bond portfolio management.

Andranik Safaryan previously worked at Credit Suisse Asset Management (Switzerland) Ltd. in Switzerland and has more than 10 years’ experience in the portfolio management of emerging market products. There, he most recently very successfully co-managed the Credit Suisse (Lux) Emerging Market Corporate Bond Fund with around USD 2 billion in assets under management (AuM) and various emerging market corporate bond mandates with around another USD 1 billion in AuM. In doing so, he followed a fundamental bottom-up approach which he enriched with his knowledge of the local conditions of individual emerging markets.

“In the prevailing low interest rate environment, emerging market corporate bonds offer an attractive and globally-diversified return opportunity. I am pleased to join such an experienced team, where we can combine our expertise and drive the development of MainFirst’s emerging markets funds,” says Andranik Safaryan. Together with Cornel Bruhin and Roman Kostal, Andranik Safaryan manages the two successful funds the MainFirst - Emerging Markets Corporate Bond Fund Balanced and the MainFirst - Emerging Markets Credit Opportunities Fund.

The complementary competences of the team will enable a holistic approach from now on. This means that the investment process will incorporate the team’s proven fundamental bottom-up and deep credit expertise, as well as macroeconomic assessments.

The team will remain true to its previous investment style, but will take changing conditions and client needs into account. In addition to financial indicators, environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) aspects, in particular, will be given a significantly greater weighting in the investment process going forward. As a result, the consideration of ESG factors is an integral part of every investment decision.

With the appointment of Andranik Safaryan, MainFirst has succeeded in bringing on board an outstanding emerging markets corporate debt portfolio manager with a remarkable track record. “With Andranik, we have a proven expert joining our team. Our competences complement each other in an ideal way, so that we are optimally positioned for the future. We are looking forward to the upcoming collaboration,” say Roman Kostal and Cornel Bruhin.
